August in Porto brings together long days, pleasant evenings, culture, music, gardens, beaches and some of the most appealing summer events in northern Portugal. 

It is a particularly interesting month for anyone planning to spend a few days in the city. As well as visiting Porto’s main monuments and historic neighbourhoods, it is also possible to attend concerts in emblematic venues, discover one of the city’s biggest literary events, enjoy outdoor programmes and set aside a day to explore the surrounding area.

Porto Pianofest: music in different parts of the city 

From 1 to 11 August 2026 

Porto Pianofest returns to the city with concerts, recitals, masterclasses and meetings between Portuguese and international musicians. 

The 2026 edition begins on 1 August at Casa da Música’s Sala Suggia, with a concert by the Aaron Parks Trio. Over the following days, the festival moves through several venues in Porto, including the Rectorate of the University of Porto, the Romantic Museum, the Porto Conservatory of Music and Serralves. 

Part of the programme takes place outdoors and some concerts have free admission. On 8 August, for example, the courtyard of the Romantic Museum hosts a recital dedicated to Chopin and Debussy. 

More than a single concert, Porto Pianofest is an invitation to discover different parts of the city through music. 

Viagem Medieval: a different day just outside Porto 

From 29 July to 9 August 2026 

In the first days of the month, a stay in Porto can include a visit to Viagem Medieval in Santa Maria da Feira. Held in the historic centre of Santa Maria da Feira, the event celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2026 and once again transforms the streets into settings inspired by the Middle Ages. 

Shows, street entertainment, markets, historical reenactments, music and gastronomy all form part of a programme designed for different ages. It is an especially interesting idea for families, but also for those who enjoy history and unusual settings. 

Santa Maria da Feira is about 30 kilometres from Porto, making it possible to visit during the afternoon and return to the city by the end of the day. 

Vizinhanças: free culture in Porto’s gardens 

During the summer, several parks and gardens across the city host Vizinhanças, a municipal cultural and community programme. Music, theatre, contemporary circus, workshops, storytelling sessions and games turn different green spaces into meeting points for residents and visitors. 

The activities usually take place on Sundays, admission is free and the programme includes options for the whole family. It is an opportunity to discover less touristy gardens, enjoy the good weather and experience a more relaxed side of Porto. Porto Book Fair: books and culture in the Palácio de Cristal Gardens 

From 21 August to 6 September 2026 

In the second half of the month, the Palácio de Cristal Gardens once again host the Porto Book Fair. The traditional stalls of booksellers and publishers are joined by a cultural programme that usually includes talks with authors, presentations, music, cinema, exhibitions and activities for children. 

The visit can easily be extended with a walk through the gardens, known for their variety of plant species and viewpoints over the Douro. With free entry and activities spread over several days, the book fair is an excellent reason to return to the space more than once during your stay. 

Summer concerts at Casa da Música 

Even outside Porto Pianofest, Casa da Música maintains a programme throughout August. In 2026, the Portugal a Gosto cycle presents concerts on Fridays, combining Portuguese music with the opportunity to discover one of the city’s most recognisable contemporary buildings. 

It is an easy plan to include in a day spent around Boavista, which can also include a visit to Casa da Música, a stop at Mercado do Bom Sucesso and a walk through the nearby gardens. Before your trip, check the updated programme and book tickets for the concerts you would like to attend. 

Setting aside a day for the beaches 

A stay of several days makes it possible to combine the energy of the city centre with a few hours by the sea. The beaches of Foz are easy to reach from central Porto, while Matosinhos offers a long urban beach, restaurants known for fish and seafood, and good metro connections. 

You can also visit Leça da Palmeira, walk by the sea and see the Piscina das Marés, designed by Álvaro Siza Vieira. Use of the pools is always subject to the calendar, opening hours and ticket availability. It is a simple plan for alternating between culture, city life and rest on the hottest days.
