Must-Visit Cafés in Downtown Porto: From Classics to Modern Spots

Cafés Imperdíveis na Baixa do Porto

If there’s one thing downtown Porto doesn’t lack, it’s great cafés – some with decades of stories to tell, others more recent, with a modern and creative atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting the city, working remotely, or just looking for a cosy place to spend time with someone special, our area is full of cafés worth discovering.

Here are some suggestions, all within a 15-minute walk from Almada 234, for every taste and mood.

For tradition lovers: Historic Cafés

Café Majestic

Rua de Santa Catarina, 112

More than just a café, Majestic is a city icon. With marble interiors, Venetian mirrors and Art Nouveau details, it’s perfect for those who appreciate elegant, historic settings. Ideal for a romantic brunch or a stylish coffee break. A must-see classic.

Café Progresso

Rua Actor João Guedes, 5

Founded in 1899, Café Progresso is the oldest café in Porto still in operation. Its warm atmosphere blends old and new, and it’s also a great spot for working, with quality coffee, light meals and a relaxed vibe.

For digital nomads: Great coffee & Wi-Fi

Época Café

Rua do Rosário, 22

Minimalist, calm and with a healthy menu, Época is a favourite among remote workers. The ambiance is light and the coffee is top-notch – perfect for a productive day with aesthetic surroundings.

Fábrica Coffee Roasters

Rua de José Falcão, 122

One of our favourites for serious coffee lovers. With its own roasting and a cool industrial vibe, Fábrica Coffee Roasters is perfect for working, reading or just watching the city go by.

For couples: Charming cafés for quality time

Combi Coffee

Rua Morgado Mateus, 29

Combi Coffee started as a coffee cart and evolved into a modern, welcoming space. Perfect for a morning date with excellent specialty coffee and delicious cakes. The vibe is young, but never too loud.

C’alma – Specialty Coffee Room

Rua de Passos Manuel, 44

As the name suggests C’alma – Specialty Coffee, is a space to slow down. Soft lighting, calm music and carefully brewed specialty coffee. Small but ideal for unhurried conversation or a quiet, inspiring break.

For urban explorers: Cafés with character

Moustache Coffee House

Praça Carlos Alberto, 104

Located in a former bourgeois building with a pleasant terrace and a decor full of personality. Moustache is a great place for a break between sightseeing or a relaxing breakfast overlooking one of downtown’s prettiest squares.

7g Roaster (in Gaia, but worth the trip)

Rua de França, 52 – Vila Nova de Gaia

Just cross the bridge and you’ll find this spacious, modern café with excellent coffee and delicious food. 7g Roaster is a great stop if you’re exploring the wine cellars or the riverside area of Gaia.
