National Historic Centres Day Porto: Porto’s essence
National Historic Centres Day Porto takes place on 28 March, when Porto once again opens its heart, its Historic Centre, for a celebration that is, above all, a tribute to the city’s identity. The day transforms streets, monuments and squares into a living stage of culture, memory and authenticity.
More than an event, this is an invitation to rediscover Porto in its most genuine form.
A living Historic Centre, a heritage for all
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, Porto’s Historic Centre is much more than a collection of buildings: it is a lived-in place, where history meets everyday life, and where each street tells part of the city’s story.
In 2026, the celebration is part of the programme “MALHA. Porto, Património de Pessoas”, reinforcing the idea that true heritage also lies in the experiences and the community that bring it to life.
A weekend to experience Porto
The celebrations extend throughout the entire weekend, with activities spread across the Historic Centre. The programme is designed for everyone, visitors, families and locals, and includes:
- Guided visits to emblematic monuments, many with free access
- Open-air concerts and musical moments
- Exhibitions and cultural workshops
- Guided routes through historic neighbourhoods
- Opening of spaces usually closed to the public
Most initiatives are free of charge, although some may require prior registration.
Experiences not to be missed
Among the highlights that offer a different way to experience the city:
- Guided tours of Palácio da Bolsa, a rare opportunity to explore one of Porto’s most iconic buildings
- Concerts in central squares, marking the beginning of the celebrations
- Historical routes (towers, churches and traditional neighbourhoods) to understand Porto from within
- Opening of institutional and cultural spaces, revealing less obvious layers of the city
Each initiative is an open door to better understand the history and soul of the Invicta.
“Porto, Gateway to the World” at World of Discoveries
As part of National Historic Centres Day Porto, World of Discoveries joins the programme with the guided visit “Porto, Gateway to the World: the city that launched the Portuguese to the sea”.
This experience directly connects Porto to the history of the Discoveries, highlighting the importance of the riverfront and the behind-the-scenes of maritime expansion, from masters and pilots to carpenters and merchants who helped connect the city to the world.
Activity details:
- Dates: 28 and 29 March
- Time: 11:00 am
- Free participation
- Limited to 25 participants per session
- Mandatory registration: info@worldofdiscoveries.com
A celebration lived in the streets
During these days, Porto takes on a different rhythm: music fills the squares, stories emerge at every corner, and an atmosphere connects past and present. It is the perfect moment to:
- stroll through Ribeira and Miragaia at a relaxed pace;
- climb historic streets and discover unexpected viewpoints;
- step into churches, museums and historic buildings;
- experience the city without rushing.
More than visiting, it is about living Porto like a local.
